Joint Statement: Ambassadors for Aung San Suu Kyi

by Burma Campaign Australia on Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at 4:43pm

One year ago Burma's pro-democracy leader and Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi was convicted of breaching the conditions of her house arrest and sentenced to 18 months house arrest. Today she has spent over 14 of the past 20 years under various forms of imprisonment. In October she will have spent 15 years under house arrest.

Aung San Suu Kyi has been detained for 15 years too long.

We, the undersigned, condemn the arrest, trial and sentencing of Aung San Suu Kyi a year ago, and we condemn her continued illegal arbitrary detention and call for her immediate and unconditional release.

We, the undersigned, condemn the continuing imprisonment of over 2,100 political prisoners in Burma and call for their immediate and unconditional release.

We, the undersigned, do not see an election process where thousands of potential opposition candidates, including Aung San Suu Kyi, have been excluded from standing for election because they have been or are a political prisoner, as credible or legitimate.

We, the undersign, pledge our support to Aung San Suu Kyi, the people of Burma and their dream of a free and genuinely democratic Burma, and we will continue to work towards this goal.
